Of 18 tons built at Russell in 1849, was wrecked at Taieri River. No lives
were lost.

Built in NZ of 41 tons she sank at Hot Water Bay south of Mercury Bay on 4th
August 1894.

1941. Hull beached at Rangitoto Island in November 1944.

Built 1914 by Bailey of 204 tons for DSFCo. Ceased running 1960.
NGUNGURU 1890c
Steamer Northern SS Co North
Built at Auckland around 1890. NSS Co bought her in 1896 and she remained in
the fleet till 1903. Sold to Sydney and then to Nelson. Wrecked without loss
of life on the Karamea bar 23 September 1908.
NIAGARA 1913
Triple screw SS Wreck Book
Built Scotland in 1913 of 7582 tons, she sank on 19th June 1940 after striking
an enemy mine between Bream Head and Moko Hinau Island en route Auckland
to Suva with 146 passengers and much gold bullion.

Of 19 tons was lost in Tolaga Bay in 1845.

Of 28 tons built at Waikawa, Southland in 1860, went missing in 1869 on a voyage
to Auckland. Previously named OAMARU LASS.
OCEAN BIRD 1872 .... JUDGE
Schooner NZ Wrecks
Of 33 tons built at Smales Point Auckland in 1871, Capsized in heavy weather
on voyage from Lyttelton about April 20th 1872. All hands lost. Was repaired
and then blown up as a spectacle 1 January 1905.

Schooner NZ Wrecks
Of 118 tons built at North Shore Auckland in 1866. Dragged her anchors in a
heavy swell in Oamaru Bay and ended up on the beach.

Built at Auckland in 1891 of 114 tons for the Paeroa service, and sold in 1908.
After WW2 believed to be lying submerged at Napier.

Built Auckland by John Graydon. Wrecked Great Barrier Island in 1892.
OMANA 1913
Steamer Northern SS Co North
Built at Auckland of 83 tons. Sold to the NSS Co in March 1922. withdrawn in
1937 and dismantled in 1940 and beached at Ngataringa Bay.
ONEHUNGA 1872 R.P. CROUCH
Schooner NZ Wrecks
Of 61 tons built at Onehunga in 1867. Was wrecked on the rocks in Oamaru
Harbour on 24th February 1872. Previously wrecked at Fox River in April 1867
but repaired.
ORAKAU 1877
Barge NZ Wrecks
Of 44 tons built Onehunga in 1865 stranded near the mouth of Waikato River in
1877 and later washed over the Bar.
ORAKEI 1882
Scow Schooner Phantom
Built Auckland by Sims & Brown. Register closed and broken up in 1921,
somewhere down south.
OREWA 1898
Steamer Northern SS Co North
Built in 1898 at Auckland, and acquired by NSS Co in 1908. In service till 1925
when sold to Hokitika. Used as oyster trawler but also helped in WW2 as ferry to
Bluff. Served last days as hulk at Bluff.
ORPHEUS 1863 Commodore W.F. BURNETT
Steam Corvette HM Navy NZ Wrecks
Of 1,706 tons was wrecked at the Manukau Heads bar on 7th February 1863 with
the loss of 189 lives out of a complement of 259. Commodore WF Burnett CB.
ORWELL 1848
Barque NZ Wrecks
Of 305 tons of Sydney was wrecked at the entrance to the Manukau Harbour on
March 2nd 1848. All hands saved, Cargo was 164 cattle and 200 sheep.

Schooner NZ Wrecks
Of 39 tons built at Wahapu , Bay of Islands in 1854, commanded by Capt. Ross,
was wrecked at Blind Bay, Great Barrier Is. on September 29th 1864. No lives lost.

Built 1887 of 219 tons in Scotland and assembled in Auckland. For ANSSF Co.
Register closed 1926.

Was smashed to pieces during ENE gales in Auckland on 7th February 1874.

Built at Auckland of 207 tons. In the fleet till 1948. Dismantled and the hull
run up on the beach at Moturekareka Island, near Kawau Island in 1952.
PACIFIC 1875 George BRADSHAW
Schooner NZ Wrecks
Of 51 tons built at Auckland in 1873, believed to have foundered on a voyage
from Timaru to Manukau in June 1875. Nine on board including a Capt. Urquhart
were lost.

Built at Auckland of 91 tons, for the Hauraki SS Co. Acquired by NSS Co in 1892
and she served in the fleet till 1917 then sold to Hokitika and was wrecked on the
Hokitika bar 23 July 1920.

Built at Oamaha by Darroch. Foundered at Auckland 1928 - remains are in the mud
at Waiheke Island.

Ship Argosy
Built Blohm & Voss in 1905. Arrived, Auckland 1938. Sailed Wellington 1946,
and at Auckland 1948.
PARANINIHI 1865
Schooner
Of 16 tons, built Mechanics Bay Auckland 1860, was lost at sea in 1865 en route
from Wanganui to Patea. Crew of five maoris lost.
PAROTO 1914
Aux Ketch Northern SS Co North
Built Auckland of 109 tons. Served in NSS Co till 1948 when sold to Napier
and then in 1949 to Nelson. In 1950 became a motor ship. Ran aground in
August 1966 on the Canterbury coast in fog.- total loss.
PEARL 1875 J. BARNES
Schooner NZ Wrecks
Of 59 tons built at Wahapu, Bay of Islands in 1873, foundered at sea en route
from Auckland to Lyttelton in July 1875. All hands lost.

Built Glasgow in 1864 of 749 tons bought by NZ 1879. Used inter-island. Wrecked
near Wellington heads 12/2/1909. 45 passengers & 30 crew lost.

Left the Bay of Islands in August 1868 for Thames and was never seen again. Some
doubt about the date of loss.

Cutter NZ Wrecks
Of 19 tons . Built at Auckland in 1862. Was stranded and became a total loss
on 30th August 1871 4 miles south of East Cape, Great Barrier Island. No lives
were lost in the accident.

Of 10 tons foundered off Kapiti Island on March 29th 1848 with loss of two lives.

Of 19 tons built Awhitu Auckland in 1864, was run ashore after springing a leak
30 miles north of Paratutae near Kapiara on March 28th 1865.

Steamer NZ Wrecks
A wooden screw steamer of 31 tons built at Auckland in 1861 was wrecked at
Auckland on April 7th 1862 during very severe gales.
PILOT 1852
Schooner NZ Wrecks
Of 15 tons built at Russell in 1851. Foundered off Whareponga 50 miles north
of Poverty Bay on 9th April 1852 with the loss of five of her crew.

Was wrecked off Manukau pilot station on December 24th 1866 on parting her
moorings.
PIRATE 1895
Scow Deck Schooner Phantom
Built Devonport by Niccol. One of the largest scows. Wrecked on Portland Island,
Poverty Bay 16th April 1897.
POLE STAR 1862
Schooner NZ Wrecks
Of 43 tons built North Shore Auckland in 1861, sailed from Auckland for Napier
on 26th April 1862 and was never seen again. 16 lives lost.
PONO 1913
Aux Ketch Northern SS Co North
Built at Auckland of 56 tons. In the fleet till 1948. used as a barge and broken
up the same year.
PORT ELLIOTT 1910
Twin Screw Steamer Wreck Book
Built in England in 1910 of 4664 tons and four masted she sank on 12th January
1924 in thick weather near Horoera Point East Cape en route Auckland - Wellington.
Much of the cargo was motor cars.
PROGRESS 1866 .... REVELL
Cutter NZ Wrecks
Under Capt. Revell, she was lost about 7 miles outside Manukau Heads on May
19th 1866. Two were lost including the Captain.

was wrecked between Waikato & Manukau in late March 1866. All crew were lost.

RANGITOTO 1913

Built Port Glasgow of 696 tons for Amazon River service but taken up as HMS
ANT in WW1. Arrived in Auckland in 1924. Laid up in 1937 because bottom
plates were worn thin. Beached at Ngataringa Bay 1942.
RARAWA 1903
Steamer Northern SS Co North
Built at Dundee of 1071 tons. Served on the Onehunga-New Plymouth run for
many years but laid up 1929. Dismantled hull beached Rangitoto Island during
WW2.
