4th October 1867 when bound from Napier to Auckland.

January 1865 and was not heard from again. Captain P. Dods.

hands in October 1848 whilst bound from Kawhia to Port Nicholson.

MAORI                   1851

A Government Schooner she was lost at Manukau Harbour en route from Onehunga 

to Waiuku on 15/10/1851. Three drowned including master, his nephew and one 

passenger. Two Europeans and 20 Maori swam ashore.

Of 15 tons built at Onehunga in 1857, sailed from Raglan after repairs on 

October 10th 1865 bound for Hokitika and was never seen again.

Of 30 tons built at Russell Bay of Islands in 1858, commanded by Captain M 

Kenny, capsized and foundered off Tairua on 20th December 1867. No lives 

lost.

Built Holland 1953 of 739 tons. Sank in heavy weather off Mercury Bay 13 June 

1968 with loss of 9 lives.

Of 27 tons built at Wellington in 1846 sailed from Kapiti for New Plymouth 

on 9th July 1846 and was never seen again.

Of 22 tons built at Coromandel in 1861, capsized 15 miles north of Tolaga 

Bay on January 7th 1873. Master and mate were drowned.

In 1889 this vessel loaded 60,000 feet of timber at Tairua for Auckland.

Built in NZ in 1860 of 28 tons, she sank on 2nd February 1870 off Tiritiri 

Matangi Island in the Hauraki Gulf.

She was of 20 tons and owned by John Salmon of Auckland.

Of 106 tons built at Auckland by Sharp & Niccol was totally wrecked near 

North Cape on March 6th 1852. One crew member was drowned. Capt. Robert J 

Eames.

Of 78 tons built at Pakiri in 1876 was lost with all hands after leaving 

Auckland in March 1877 bound for Uvea.

year to Noumea, sold to Burns Philp  1895 and to Perth in 1898. Converted to 

hulk in 1916.

Of 136 tons built at Sunderland UK in 1853. Was stranded and became a total 

loss on 15th January 1876 on North Head Kaipara Harbour.

Of 41 tons built at Auckland in 1870 stranded on St. Stephen's Island on 15th 

August 1878. No lives were lost in the accident.

Of 92 tons and with two masts built at Deptford Kent in 1858, was wrecked on

Built at Auckland in 1920 of 197 tons. Later became an auxiliary ketch. In 

February 1962 whilst berthed at Lyttelton was crushed by the ferry MAORI and 

damaged beyond repair. Dismantled at Dunedin.

Built 1899 Newcastle, 2,027 tons, as North Lyell, for service Sydney-

Launceston. Laid up Auckland 1914. Sold to Douglas SS Co scrapped 1956.



MOURILYAN               1908

Built Glasgow 1908 of 1,349 tons for the Queensland coastal routes. 

Chartered to AUSN for Victorian service. Used as Patrol vessel in WW1. Sold 

to Northern SS Co renamed MATANGI for Auckland-Tauranga.
