Wellington is located at the Southern end of the North Island and includes the cities of Wellington, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt and Porirua. Wellington City is perched on the edge of the harbour (Port Nicholson) and is surrounded by steep hills. To the East of Wellington is the Rimutaka Range and beyond that the Wairarapa Plain. To the North is the Hutt Valley which is where much of Wellington's urban expansion has taken place with there still being open farmland to the North of the Hutt Valley Cities. To the North East of Wellington over the hills on the coast is the city of Porirua with the coastal communities spreading beyond to the north.
