APANUI 1905 Steamer Northern SS Co. North Built at Port Glasgow in 1905 of 243 tons. Laid up in Auckland in 1937 and then scrapped. APHRASIA 1841 Paddle Steamer Wreck Book Built in England of 99 tons sank on 2nd November 1864 in Takou Bay north of the Bay of Islands whilst on passage from Auckland to Newcastle NSW. APHRASIA 1864 .... STEWART Steamer NZ Wrecks Paddle Steamer of 131 tons, built at Deptford Co Durham NSW in 1841 commanded by Capt. Stewart, was wrecked in Takou Bay Bay of Islands on November 2nd 1864. No lives lost. AQUILLA 1840 Cutter NZ Wrecks Of 40 tons she had sailed from Kororareka for the Thames when on the night of 29th June 1840 she was wrecked upon rocks in the Bay of Islands. ARAHURA 1905 Twin Screws Union SS Co Plowman Built Dumbarton 1905 of 1,596 tons for Auckland-Gisborne-Napier and also on the Cook Strait run. Transferred to Anchor Line 1925 and used on Cook Strait run. Failed survey in 1949. Hulk bombed by RNZAF 1952. ARAPAWA 1908 Steamer Northern SS Co. North Built Pailsey 1908 and bought by NSS Co in 1914 and served around NZ Coasts until 1938 when laid up in Auckland. Beached Rangitoto in 1941. ARGO 1873 Schooner NZ Wrecks Of 32 tons built at Omaha in 1865. Believed to have foundered at sea with the loss of all four hands on board on voyage from Auckland to Whangarei in 1873. ARGYLE 1876 Steamer McGregor Ltd. North Built Auckland 1876 of 159 tons, taken over by NSS Co in 1881. Played a part in rescues of WAIRARAPA wrecking, in Oct. 1894. Sold 1897 to Adelaide and broken up at Adelaide 1915. ARIEL 1859 Schooner NZ Wrecks Of 22 tons built at Hot Springs Auckland in June 1859, was on her maiden voyage from Napier to Auckland when driven ashore in Poverty Bay on 15th August 1859. No lives were lost. ARIEL 1868 Cutter NZ Wrecks Of 18 tons built at Coromandel in 1860 was wrecked at Cabbage Bay, Hauraki Gulf May 12th 1868. ARRAH-NA-POGUE 1912 Scow Schooner Phantom Built Auckland by Niccol. Last seen as power barge on Derwent River Tasmania. ARTHUR MCKENZIE 1864 Brig NZ Wrecks Of 229 tons and built at Bremen - Capt. Scott - stranded at South Spit, Port Waikato when inward bound from Adelaide on June 1st 1864. SHEARER Schooner NZ Wrecks Of 16 tons registered at Auckland in 1850, went ashore at Maraenui Bay, Bay of Plenty on 5th October 1875, later re-built by Maoris. BRAMPTON 1823 .... BUFFALO HM Ship Tairua Between 1834 & 1840 HMS Buffalo made 3 trips to NZ to collect Kauri spars. Was wrecked on her third trip at Mercury Bay. BUFFALO 1813 Warship Wreck Book Built in India of 589 tons sank on 28th July 1840 at Mercury Bay, after being driven ashore in a gale. Two lives were lost. CASHMERE GEN 88 385 Arrived Auckland from Gravesend 14 Apr. 1857 CECILIA SUDDEN 1902 4 masted schooner Wreck Book Built in USA of 545 tons, she caught fire on 8th September 1921 and drifted onto the southern end of Great Barrier Island. CHALLENGE 1870 J. HOBBS Schooner NZ Wrecks Of 57 tons built at Akaroa in 1867. Struck the bar at the entrance to Manukau Harbour on May 13th 1870. CHALLENGER 1874 Paddle Steamer NZ Wrecks Of 41 tons built at North Shore Auckland in 1870. Was smashed to pieces in Auckland Harbour by ENE gales on February 7th 1874. CHARLOTTE 1858 NZ Wrecks Of 16 tons registered at Auckland was lost at Opotiki in 1858, CHELMSFORD 1886 Steamer Northern SS Co North Built 1886 at Sydney of 103 tons. Bought by NSS Co in 1889 for use on Whangarei and East coast service. Had a chapter of accidents. Laid up 1918 in Auckland. Buried in reclamation June 1928. CITY OF CORK 1877 Paddle Waitemata Ferry Waitemata Built 1877 of 44 tons by Hawkeswood. Converted to a barge in 1890. CITY OF EDINBURGH 1809 Tairua Loaded spars in Bay of Islands probably not kauri spars though. CLAN ALPINE 1877 James SMART Schooner NZ Wrecks Of 40 tons built at Mechanics Bay Auckland in 1876, believed to have foundered near Kaikoura peninsula on 24th October 1877 in heavy weather. All hands were lost. CLANSMAN 1930 Motor Ship Northern SS Co North Built 1930 at Auckland as the WAKA. Bought and renamed October 1934. DAPHNE 1908c Motor Ship Northern SS Co North Built pre 1908 at Auckland of 192 tons & sold to NSS Co in 1908. Sold in 1931 and converted to motor ship and named AWANUI. Sold again 1942 and her engines used in TIROA. Beached in St. Mary's Bay 1956. DARING 1865 Schooner NZ Wrecks Of 31 tons built Mangawhai in 1863, Capt. Phipps, went ashore on Rangahia Beach 8 miles from Kaipara Heads, on 22nd February 1865 Had previously stranded at Waikato Heads in June 1864 and been repaired. DART 1850 Schooner NZ Wrecks Of 13 tons built at Pidgeon Bay Banks Peninsula in 1844 was lost at Waiheke in 1850. DART 1869 .... WHYTE Schooner NZ Wrecks Of 30 tons built in Akaroa in 1867, was lost on voyage to Auckland in February 1869. DAUNTLESS 1872 Schooner NZ Wrecks Of 72 tons. Belived to have been lost in July 1872 after sailing from Tauranga on June 28th for Auckland. DAUNTLESS 1875 Hans POULSEN Schooner NZ Wrecks Of 72 tons built at Devonport in 1871, sailed from Dunedin on June 28th 1875 for Wellington via Oamaru, She cleared Moeraki on July 10th and was never heard of again. All hands were lost. DEFENDER 1901 Steamer Wreck Book Built Australia of 109 tons she sank on 2nd August 1918 at Somes Island in Wellington harbour after burning for some hours. DIANA 1856 Schooner NZ Wrecks Of about 30 tons, was wrecked at Whakatane on March 24th 1856 when bound from Auckland to East Coast. ELIZABETH 1841 Schooner NZ Wrecks Of 51 tons she sailed from Bay of Islands bound for Auckland and on 17th April 1841 was totally wrecked on Elizabeth Reef, near Whananaki. ELIZABETH 1854 Schooner NZ Wrecks Of 43 tons built at Hokianga in 1851, dragged her anchors at Port Tryphena Great Barrier Island on 17th November 1854. Thomas Clarkson when she was wrecked crossing the Sumner Bar on December 8th 1866.
