Auckland's Civic Theatre is being converted into a lyric theatre and is undergoing a major heritage restoration and redevelopment process. This includes a flytower that will provide facilities so that large stage productions can use the new theatre.

Extensive heritage restoration works on the exterior and interior of the Civic are currently under way. All heritage works for the project have the approval of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust (Department of Internal Affairs), which includes a seismic upgrade of the building and upgrades to meet Building Act requirements, Heritage Conservation Plans and the New Zealand Historic Places Trust Heritage Orders.

The Auckland City Council is responsible for the Civic theatres maintenance and upkeep.
