Surgeon Dr John I Lancaster, RN MD

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SIR ROBERT SALE, left Gravesend on 13 Jun 1847, left Cork IRE on 4 Jul 1847, arrived in Auckland,
on 11 Oct 1847.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Capt Alexander McDonald commanded the 3rd Detachment of Sir Robert Sale passengers. They were
New Zealand's first consignment of settlers from Southern Ireland.

Due to the Potato famine and typhus fever many were suffering from the effects of hunger and
malnutrition. Some had found temporary lodgings in densely crowded, unhygenic accomodation 2
weeks before boarding the ship. There were too many passengers sick on board the ship to list.
The passengers were in Aucklands dock at the same time as the 'Ramillies' and 'Minerva', however
the passengers had to remain on board until 22 Nov 1847. The worst cases were sent to the Colonial
Hospital, however Mrs Boyle died of paralysis as there was no room available at the Hospital.

Fencibles settled Howick, in Auckland NZ.
