----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RAMILLIES, left Tilbury 14 Apr 1847, arrived Auckland, 5 Aug 1847.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Men from all over the British Isles, including the Channel Islands, were selected for this
shipment of Fencibles. Mjr William Henry Kenny, 73rd Regt, commanded this first detachment of
Fencibles who settled Onehunga in Auckland NZ.
Aucklanders were genuinely surprised to see them. No land and no houses had been built.
Troops and families were kept on the Ramillies for two months after reaching Auckland, then
billeted in Albert Barracks while barracks were built at Onehunga.
The troops worked on the roads to provide a link between the Manukau and Waitemata. Some of
the cottages that were built for them, stand to this day.
